Japan is suddenly showing concern about peace and stability in East Asia. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda says he hopes China can focus on the overall situation and maintain regional stability together with Japan. But the problem is whether  Japan is qualified to talk about the overall situation, given what it has done so far on the Diaoyu Islands issue, says an article in People’s Daily. Excerpts:

Japanese politicians first destroyed the consensus, reached 40 years ago, that both sides should “shelve disputes and carry out joint development”. Japan’s “purchasing” and “nationalization” of the islands clearly show it does not care about regional stability and peace.

If the Japanese really care, the only explanation is that they have underestimated China’s strong reaction and resolute stance on the issue.

Japan should head in the correct direction as soon as possible. Before that happens, Noda is ineligible to talk about the overall situation regarding regional stability and peace in front ofChina.

In contrast, China has shown considerable restraint in seeking a peaceful solution to the issue, when  right-wing activists are doing their best to play the   Diaoyu Islands card to win more support at home for their political careers.

Japan’s bad national image was caused not only by the invasion war it started, but also by its reluctance to face up to its past.

China hopes to maintain  peaceful relations with Japan. But the most important precondition for this is that Japan must not take any irresponsible unilateral action to infringe upon China’s sovereignty and territory. If Japan cannot fulfill this condition, peaceful coexistence about the overall situation is  only empty talk.
